Pleasant Pheasant . . .
I wanted to share some
recent pictures I took today of the outside gang of Ringneck Pheasants,
along with some new discoveries about them.
It was time for me to renew the nest-boxes for their neighboring
feathered friends, and I just brought home some square bales of hay for
the horses, so I threw a bale in the wheelbarrow and headed out to the
Poultry Plaza for a little maintenance. I got interrupted briefly,
while the wheelbarrow was in the huge pheasant flight pen. When I
returned, I found several very happy pheasants checking out the hay,
and another enjoying some extra feed in the bucket that was also in the
wheelbarrow (and intended for another pen of birds).
As I was renewing old nest material, I made sure to add some fresh hay
to the pheasant pen as well as clean out my hay storage area of some
older hay - why not "recycle" the old stuff? The pheasants are having a
blast running through the hay, picking through it, and seem to be in a
much better mood overall having it around in the pen.
My new discovery: I heard one of the males making a sound much like a
cat purring! That was a new one for me, and I'm sure it was a male
because he was right next to me, picking in the hay with delight.
Above on the left are two Ringneck Pheasant males enjoying picking
through the hay, and two females are on the right. Below is another
shot of some pheasants enjoying their "haying", and on the bottom right
is a stre-e-etched female who was busy checking me out! I thought the
picture was cute, so I had to take it!!

These pheasant pictured on this page are now mature, and are starting
to breed. One hen has laid an egg, so it shouldn't be long before the
rest of the ladies start laying. We will keep light on them in the fall
and early winter, then let them rest and they should produce again in
the spring.
