ABOUT US - CBF SUPER QUAIL
The CBF in CBF Super Quail (and yes,
they really are SUPER) stands for Cinda Brent Family. This is a family
venture ever so much, and we all enjoy it. My husband Frank enjoys the
birds, too - but due to his disabilities is unable to do much with
them. Other active party is our son Jake, who helped
tremendously in the construction of the poultry house, and
miscellaneous help with fencing and pens. We
couldn't have done it without you, THANKS A MILLION!
So how on earth did we get started in
all of this? Well, when I met Frank he had a small home flock of
chickens, just for personal use - lots of tasty eggs, a few eating
birds, and enjoying hatching the babies. He had raised quail and
pheasant before, and we got a few of them at that time also. Boy did
ol' Cinda get hooked on that!
We moved from Ohio to Arkansas in 1999
and with us a handful of chickens, bobwhites and ringneck pheasant. We
had to start over from scratch again recently, as we no longer had any
of the original birds or their offspring that we moved with. Let me see
if I can get the order on this right, again...we acquired a few
"hand-me-down" misc. chickens from some friends. Next, Frank got the
poultry bug and had ordered Bobwhite eggs and got me interested in the
Jersey Giants. It has been a steady downhill slide from there, enter
into the picture Ringnecks, Turkeys, and Ornamental Pheasant.....we
love them all! (Except the guineas, more hate than love in that
relationship scenario.)
The birds are a great source of
enjoyment. As I mentioned earlier, I'm a sucker for hatching little
babies and I get to do lots and lots of that. I love fresh eggs. Wow,
I'm set for life there, too. Fresh poultry on the table is a good
payback as well, I got to eat my first guinea a while back and LOVED
IT. We have flight pens now for the pheasant and all of the birds have
covered pens to keep predators out, we also have poultry netting so
that wild birds don't get in. It's great to sit out in the evening and
watch the birds just doing there thing, the guineas have done a great
job of keeping the bugs down. When you can sit outside in the evening
in Arkansas where rice is grown nearby and there's a pond on your
property, and not get eaten alive or carried away by mosquitos.....it's nothing shy of a miracle! But it doesn't make
tolerating the constant yapping of the guineas much better. I know who
is next to go on the table - the one who yaps the most and loudest.
We will be adding a screen room to
the back of the house to sit out and watch the birds completely
bugless, I think that room will become a favorite around here. The
birds really are that nice to watch, TV is dull in comparison.
Frank and I are especially fond of
cooking, and sharing good food with our friends. This affords us a
wonderful opportunity to share poultry products with our family and
friends in a wide variety of ways. We love all of them!
Hope to update soon with some more pictures, but this will have to do for now.
